Resistant Materials


Welcome to Resistant Materials.  Please find below an brief outline of what our pupils will be studying during Key Stage 3. 

 

Year 7 Resistant Materials – Design and Make a ‘money box’ in wood

Health and Safety – Pupils:

  • Learn the rules of the workshop
  • Make list of types of accidents that could happen if the rules were not followed

Design and make a poster with the theme of workshop safety

Pupils introduced to the concept of drawing 3 dimensionally through the basics of isometric drawing

Working to dimensions

Continue to practice isometric drawing and rendering techniques and how to present work.

Pupils to draw and render 6 workshop tools (they will use later).

Pupils to draw box and render to their own design.

Pupils introduced to workshop.

Recap on safety.

Demonstrate how to make box in a step by step manner – pupils to write down instructions after each step. The working properties of wood are explained.

Practical – Measure, mark out and cut wood accurately to size. Glue and nail joints etc complete and finish box.

Apply paint finish to box to own design

Pupils to complete an evaluation of their workbooks.

Complete the task on CAD/CAM in the workbook

Use CAD (draw or 2D design) to draw  their completed box in 3D

Skills to learn:

Use Try square to mark out

Tenon saw to cut material to size

Sand wood with the grain

Glue and nail wood to make a box

Cut out and fit animal shape to box

Use hand drill to drill slot

Nail punch and fill holes and gaps

Varnish or paint completed box to good standard

 

Year 8 Resistant Materials –

Design and make a device to store items using foamex plastic

Look for opportunities at home where a storage device would come in useful

Class to discuss opportunities identified and choose a problem to solve (often a mobile phone holder).

Pupils to note accurate measurements of item to be stored

Produce ideas for a solution on paper, best idea to be modelled in card

After some instruction on the use of 2D Design (a CAD drawing package) pupils will make a CAD drawing of their design to be produced by a computer controlled machine.

Pupils take freshly machined blank and use another device to make the required bends and fit the support structure.

Some graphics are designed and placed on the product to enhance its appearance.

A thorough evaluation is then completed in their workbooks.

 

Year 9 Resistant Materials

This project covers the Key Skills - level 1 problem solving and and involves the design and making of a clock

“Design and make a stylish clock to go into a particular room in your home. The shape of the clock will be based upon a theme of your own choice.”

Brainstorm the brief to identify what needs to be investigated

Pupils are shown what materials are available and what constraints need to be considered when designing. Wood, Acrylic etc.

Pupils will sketch some ideas for their design solution using isometric techniques

A final solution will be presented with full annotation and a specification to explain details.

Demonstrations will be given in the workshop to explain some working techniques.

Pupils will then write a complete ‘plan to make’ ready to realise their product.

Pupils will start work in the workshop tgo produce their clock and will be shown how to use certain machines in a safe manner: e.g. Pillar drill, disc sander, polishing wheel.

A suitable finish will be applied: e.g. Paint, varnish, graphics, or a high polish

Testing of the product will take place and a full evaluation will be done to assess the success or otherwise of the solution.

Pupils will then be asked to reflect on their problem solving skills and identify where how to improve them.

 

Scheme of work for GCSE Years 10 & 11 (KS4)
