Key Stage 3

Textiles Technology Scheme of Work – General Overview: [please note that the textiles element is taught in tandem with Resistant Materials & Food Technology in approximately 20 week blocks across the KS3 provision]

Year 7

‘FUN HATS’ – Pupils will design & make a hat in order to learn basic construction techniques, the design process including the development of a  specification, 2D modelling & CAD/CAM techniques relating to the sewing machine & Adobe Photoshop software.

Pattern cutting & colour theory will also be addressed as part of the introductory period to this specific subject within technology. Pupils are encouraged to research existing artefacts & develop their own original design ideas.

Year 8

‘Native American Design’ – Pupils will undertake design & make tasks relating to the creation of items inspired by the study of Native American Art & Design. The process of sublimation printing will feature heavily within this module thus enabling the pupil to experience the design process from paper to computer software.

The resulting sublimation print will be incorporated into a textile item, consequently traditional construction techniques will also be embraced during this module.

Year 9

‘Design & Make a Bag’ – This task relates specifically to the Wider Key Skills Framework i.e. Level 1 Problem Solving. The successful completion of the module will enable the pupils to achieve a Level 1 qualification in Problem Solving [equivalent to grades D to G at GCSE level]; at present, this qualification forms an integral aspect of the Welsh Baccalaureate qualification and will be an essential component to pass if the pupil is to successfully achieve the Intermediate Welsh Baccalaureate qualification in KS4.    

Pupils will respond to a set brief relating to designing and making a bag which may be either decorative, functional or both. Year 9 pupils will be expected to bring their previous textiles and design experiences to bear with regard to the creation of this item, further supported by an investigation & design development folio.

Issues covered within this module include investigating and evaluating existing products, Health & Safety considerations, design specification, construction skills.

Key Stage 4

Year 10 - Coursework Portfolio 60% of final GCSE grade

Autumn Term

Foundation Period: Short focus tasks relating to developing creative textile skills, techniques and resource gathering. Visits to Portmeirion & Bath [National Museum of Costume] enable pupils to gather resources by camera and sketchbook in addition to addressing the contextual element of the syllabus i.e. art, design appreciation. 

Spring Term: Completion of short focus outcome e.g. silkscreen print, textile item:

These outcomes will relate to one of the two visits and will enable pupils to experience the creation of a significant final piece.

Spring half term: Pupils will start to research and develop an individual theme which will form the major element within their portfolio. This for example could relate to their personal environment &/or interests. Items could include garments, soft furnishing &/or purely decorative outcomes.

Summer Term:Continuation of personal theme:

Following the initial period of resource gathering, pupils will develop their ideas using a range of materials; emphasis will be placed upon creating an outcome prior to the end of the Summer term e.g.  Silkscreen print, Fabric painting, fashion garment.

The work of other artists, textile artists, fashion designers etc. will need to inform the development of the personal theme e.g. using similar creative techniques, colour schemes. The focus will be upon the pupil’s personal response to an artist/ designer’s work and not a biographical account.

Year 11 

Autumn Term:Continuation of personal theme:

The portfolio should now  demonstrate an increasing maturity as regards content and the pupil’s will be encouraged to develop a final outcome for the portfolio using a creative technique different to that experienced during the previous term. The portfolio must be completed by the Christmas holiday as the final exam paper will be opened following January 1st. The final portfolio should feature a balance between investigation, idea/design development,

Experimentation re techniques, making skills & art/design appreciation.

Spring Term:Exam PREPARATION   PERIOD [minimum of 6 weeks] & Controlled Exam [10 hours] - this element contributes 40% of final GCSE grade:

Following the official opening of the exam paper during the first week of the Spring term, pupils will undertake a period of resource gathering, art appreciation and design/idea development in response to their chosen question.

The final outcome will commence during early March and be completed under examination conditions [10 hours spread over an extended period of days].

Summer Term:

Pupil’s will have resolved all of their GCSE Textiles work by May 15th deadline, however, pupils will be encouraged to complete all tasks at the earliest opportunity in order to focus upon revision / preparation for their remaining GCSE examinations.

The WJEC Website has a breadth of useful resources that pupils & parents may access e.g. exemplar material & information regarding assessment. It is encouraging to note that this resource includes a pleasing range of textiles & art work created by pupils of Ysgol Uwchradd Tregaron.
